the president will run for re-election. we're also seeing a little bit of how mitt romney, the likely republican nominee is going to run against president obama. we'll have a bit more on that later in the show. of course, before mr. romney can fully jump into a general election campaign against the president, he still has to dispatch his rivals for the republican nomination. at this point in the campaign that means mitt romney has to be showing that he's consolidating his lead, showing he is locking up the republican establishment. pretty much every single day now that means mitt romney rolls out a high profile republican establishment endorsement. last week it was former florida governor jeb bush. this week it was republican senators mike lee and marco rubio and former president george h.w. bush. getting endorsements like that, having high profile surrogates, to talk on your behalf, for mr. romney that's been a doubl double-edged sword this year. on our staff and on our blog we talk about this as mitt romney's surrogate problem. right around the time of michigan primary you may remember mr. rom

romney go back to the lab and emerge with mitt romney 2.0, this is "now." joining me today, kurt anderson, host of studio 360 radio and john harwood, karen finney, and political analyst, john heileman. last night, mitt romney won the most states and extended his overall delegate lead to more than 200, but the bottom line is that he has not locked up the nomination, is he becoming a stronger candidate or a weaker one? folks? my thinking here is that this could be a pivot point for the team romney, not just going back to the lab but refining a message, making him a stronger candidate, there's a contention out there that he has been bloodied and bruised but this could be good. >> i'm feeing like we have read that and said that five or six times eer already. the question was would newt gingrich make him a better candidate. so far, i've not seen what we have seen in the democratic race as hillary and obama duked it out. obama ended up being a stronger candida candidate, but along with that we saw turn out and excitement in the democratic party only to up, which helped in the general.
an idea about how good a week this was for mitt romney. last week at this table we were talking about whether he might even survive the week, like his home state of michigan, whether he would lose that. republican leaders were debating whether their nominating convention was ghog going to be utter chaos. now republicans are debating whether romney's challengers should step aside to allow him to unify the party. don't think this thing is over yet. we'll get to why in a moment. first we start with mitt romney's very good week with victories in michigan and arizona under his belt. he tried again to turn his attention back to president obama. >> this campaign is a choice for america as to what kind of a country we want. barack obama is turning us into a european welfare-type society, where people feel they're entitled to what their neighbor has. gwen: but he has to get through sup tuesday first. is ohio this week's michigan? >> you know, it is. the stakes are high. in this race momentum hasn't meant what it's meant in other campaigns, where you win one contest and that carries you on to t
